Explaining Technology in Business terms — for Cloud Architects
Cloud architects are part business and part technical. They help businesses achieve their objectives by designing a technical strategy based on the business strategy. As such, they need to have great communication skills, emotional intelligence and executive presence to effectively explain to executive leadership how their designs would solve business problems and what value that solution would bring to the company. In other words, they need to translate technical solutions to business terms.
Don’t over-specify. Beyond a point, the effort to be complete exceeds its value — following the law of diminishing returns. ― Roger Evernden, 101 Lessons From Enterprise Architecture
In this blog series aimed at cloud architects, I describe various technologies using a simple 3-step approach: what the technology is, how the technology works, and why should a business use it. My intent is to refer back to these articles myself when I need a refresher on the business explanation of the technology, but I also hope they can be useful to someone else out there.
Happy Architecting!
